Karnal Fort (Old Fort) – A Heritage Site in Karnal

Karnal Fort, also known as the Old Fort, is a historic landmark built around 1764 AD by Gajpat Rai, the ruler of Jind. Over time, it was captured by the Marathas, George Thomas, the ruler of Ladwa, and later the British. It served various roles—from a military post and court to a residence and prison—before becoming part of the British cantonment.

The fort also briefly housed Dost Mohammad Khan, ruler of Kabul. Today, it serves as the residence for the Tehsildar and other government officials. Karnal Fort stands as a symbol of the city’s rich and layered history.
